LinkedIn for South African Job Seekers: Build a Profile Recruiters Actually Find
A LinkedIn profile that works for job seekers does two jobs. It appears when recruiters search for your target role, and it convinces them to contact you once they click. Both depend on the same things: a keyword-rich headline, the right skills, achievement-led experience, and a profile that matches your CV.

How recruiters use LinkedIn in South Africa
Recruiters use LinkedIn in two ways. They search for candidates by job title, skills, location, company and school. And they check LinkedIn to verify candidates they found elsewhere, on PNet or in their ATS. If your profile is empty, outdated or tells a different story from your CV, you lose the opportunity quietly. What is career visibility?
Step 1: Write a headline recruiters search for
Your headline is the most heavily weighted part of your profile in search. Use this formula:
Target job title + top skill keywords + your unique strength or biggest win
Example: "Financial Accountant | IFRS, Month-End Close, SAP | Cut reporting time by 40%"
Avoid "Unemployed", "Looking for opportunities" or only your current company name. They tell recruiters nothing searchable.
Step 2: Use a professional photo and a working banner
Use a clear, well-lit headshot where your face fills most of the frame. Your banner is free advertising space: state what you do and who you help. The banner is 1584 by 396 pixels. Keep important text away from the bottom-left corner, where your profile photo covers it on screen.
Step 3: Write an About section that sells your value
Open with the problem you solve, not your life story. Then cover your experience, your biggest results, and the roles you are targeting. End by listing your top 5 skills so recruiters and the search engine can see them clearly.
Step 4: Build your experience around results
Use the same achievement bullets as your CV: action, task, measurable result. Match job titles and dates to your CV exactly.
One mistake we see constantly: typing your employer or university as plain text instead of selecting the official company or school page. Recruiters filter searches by linked company and school. If yours is not linked, you do not appear in those searches.
Step 5: Choose the right skills
LinkedIn lets you list many skills, and recruiters search by them. At Khumbu Digitals we build a list of 50 recruiter-searchable skills for each client, taken from live job adverts for their target role. Put your most important skills first and attach them to the roles where you used them.
Step 6: Switch on Open to Work the right way
Open to Work lets you tell recruiters which job titles, locations and work types you want. You can show it to recruiters only, or to everyone with the green photo frame. If you are employed, choose recruiters only. Add up to 5 job titles you actually qualify for.
Step 7: Stay active without posting every day
A well-optimised profile is found in searches even if you rarely post. When you do post, show problems you have solved, not daily announcements that you are looking for work. Comment thoughtfully on posts in your industry and connect with recruiters and hiring managers in your field.

Frequently asked questions
Do recruiters in South Africa really use LinkedIn?
Yes, especially for professional, corporate, and specialist roles. Many also use PNet, so being visible on both gives you the widest reach. PNet guide.

Should I use the green Open to Work frame?
It is a personal choice. If you are unemployed, it can increase recruiter contact. If you are employed, set Open to Work to recruiters only.

Do I need LinkedIn Premium?
No. A fully optimised free profile is enough to be found by recruiters.

How is LinkedIn different from my CV?
Your CV is tailored to each application. LinkedIn is always on and searchable, so it should be broad enough to cover your target roles while matching your CV's facts.

How often should I update my profile?
Whenever your role, results or targets change, and at least every few months.
